Seir Anphin v2.0.4 is available
By Darrel Grant on Oct 20, 2008 - 2:10 AM

The new version is finally done and seeing production use. Here's a rundown of the new additions.

New Features

Custom front pages. All members may now customize their front pages from a selection of premade blocks. These blocks each have a wide and narrow version depending on whether you put them in the left or right column.

Nav Menu Editor. This CP tool makes it easier to edit the main menu at the top of the page.

Redesigned CP. The Admin Control Panel is now skinnable.

Improved text filtering. All user input is now put through a text-filter which parses HTML and removes all tags not specifically defined as legal. Now you can leave the allow_html setting on without inviting despair.

System Information in CP. Retrieves server version and hardware information from various windows/linux sources.

Streamlined upgrade system. Updating now consists only of uploading your files and running a script. The script now imports updated skins, templates, blocks, wordbits and settings for you.

Blog subscriptions. Users can subscribe to blogs and can see their subscribed blogs on the front page using one of the new blocks.

User Requests

  • Quick reply for forums
  • "Who viewed my profile"

Other Nice Things

  • Improved skins
  • The "Developer Tools" module is gone, but some of the functionality (database schema viewer) has moved to the CP maintenance file
  • Improved support for private communities (see settings members_only_access (core) and new_user_moderation (user))
  • Email system sends Private Messages when email features are turned off, make sure email validation is not turned on when email features are turned off
  • Smaller carbon footprint
  • Fixed many bugs, including all problems related to custom table prefix support

As always, I recommend that all human beings, everywhere, immediately begin using the new version. It features resistance to zombie bites and vampire mind-powers. There is no other CMS which compares.

2.0.4 in development
By Darrel Grant on Jul 3, 2008 - 11:15 AM

A significant amount of time has passed since 2.0.3 was released and it has had a fair chance to wade the cold, dead air of my lovely community here. Some time ago I began work on the next iteration. With a new and flamboyantly colorful skin to mark the occasion, 2.0.4 adds nice new features for all manner of human.

For administrators, a menu editor allows links to be added ordered, hidden and removed from the main menu more easily than gutting a fish with a blowtorch. Truly, it couldn't possibly get any easier.

For all users, blocks can be added to the Home Page, showing useful things like which topics and blogs you are subscribed to, who is your friend and which famous Pirates died in Antarctica. There are others, I forget what they do.

Should any of the guests who post in this forum from time to time or other gentle folk giving Seir Anphin an appraisal care to suggest, demand or extort the addition of a new feature or two, please feel free.

On my own, I have a hard time coming up with feature ideas that aren't insane or offensive, and tend to rely on user feedback to provide direction to the project.

Seir Anphin v2.0.3 is available
By Darrel Grant on Mar 9, 2008 - 11:28 PM

This release focuses on improving Seir Anphin's ease of use and functionality. Social networking is improved by the addition to friends and ignores blocks to user profiles, notes now POST using the Ajax library, which is neat, and still works without javascriipt, and all skins have been updated to include support for IE7.

Now in version 2.0.3 Seir Anphin's version 2 core is somewhat tried and tested and is now ready for the attention of the world at large. This update, combined with the new licensing terms, should make Seir Anphin a viable alternative to many well known content management solutions, and I will be making many (serious) efforts at self-promotion. My budget is limited, my time precious, if anyone has any suggestions as to how to promote the free and commercial activities here I have created a forum for brainstorming and recording such efforts.

Changelog
-Added friends and ignores blocks to user profiles
-Added an easy block creation tool for adding premade blocks to existing pages
-Changed format of exported skin files, so skins exported when there are extra skin fields will still be compatible with basic installations
-Note box uses Ajax to post
-Added "if" to search system ignored word list
-Added IE 7 support to all skins
-Cleaned up forums topic layout
-All ajax features degrade for browsers which don't support
-Fixed a bug in the mailer that would have prevented non-queuing messages from having their swap vars inserted
-Removed up and down links when toggling blocks
-Removed locations from online users
-Cannot post profile notes to someone who has ignored you

Upgrading
Upgrade instructions are included in the zip package.

Seir Anphin v2.0.2 is available
By Darrel Grant on Jan 14, 2008 - 5:31 PM

Most noticeably, this version brings a new template set which supports CSS based skins. The variety of layout changes present in the update can be seen by testing these new updated skins from the front page.

"Spooky Pookie" was made in honor of my dear sweet Lady Friend and is crafted to satisfy her gothic sensibilities.

Other new features include an RSVP system for the calendar, and an Ajax library which fancies up user profiles and the rsvp system. I'm not sure where I'll go with Ajax features with regards to compatibility with old browsers in the future, but more is likely to come.

Blog owners now have some control over the blocks which appear on their blogs. A new minimonth block has been added to blogs which shows which dates on which there are blog posts.

I suggest you immediately adopt Seir Anphin as your portal system of choice or update to this latest version if it already is.

Seir Anphin v2.0.1 is available
By Darrel Grant on Nov 6, 2007 - 9:55 AM

This release brings better email support, RSS feeds, many file & image gallery improvements, improved installer features, a new layout and skin and many smaller improvements which to not lend themselves well to artfully succinct explanation. An upgrade system is now in place which will allow you to quickly install future updates.
